UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity

At the 32nd General Conference of UNESCO, “Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage” was acknowledged. Turkey has completed the process of becoming a party to the Convention in March 27, 2006.

There are three ICH lists formed due to the 16th, 17th and the 18th articles of the Convention which are:

  1. Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity
  2. List of Intangible Cultural Heritage in Need of Urgent Safeguarding
  3. Register of Good Safeguarding Practices

 

There are 16 heritages of Turkey in the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity:

  1. Arts of the Meddah, public storytellers
  2. Mevlevi Sema Ceremony
  3. Âşıklık (minstrelsy) tradition
  4. Karagöz
  5. Kırkpınar oil wrestling festival
  6. Semah, Alevi-Bektaşi ritual
  7. Traditional Sohbet meetings
  8. Ceremonial Keşkek tradition
  9. Mesir Macunu festival
  10. Turkish coffee culture and tradition
  11. Ebru, Turkish art of marbling
  12. Flatbread making and sharing culture: Lavash, Katyrma, Jupka, Yufka
  13. Nawrouz, Novruz, Nowrouz, Nowrouz, Nawrouz, Nauryz, Nooruz, Nowruz, Navruz, Nevruz, Nowruz, Navruz
  14. Traditional craftsmanhip of Çini-making
  15. Spring celebration, Hıdrellez

 

Turkey has registered the Whistled Language to the List of Intangible Cultural Heritage in Need of Urgent Safeguarding in 2017  as well. However, there are no Turkish properties in Register of Good Safeguarding Practices.
